Songs are like prayers. Even the most original work is never truly yours. They swell as they pass over the seabed of time, collecting all manner of matter and energy as they break across the shoreline. This imagery fills my head as I look back on the year and a half journey it took me to release my debut solo album, The Same Salt. Every piece of this record, save some mastering magic from my dearest friend and mentor, is a product of my effort and energy. I came to truly understand what is required in order to identify as an "independent" artist. However, I realize more than ever how our art and our identities are perpetually tied to the land and the people who carry us. This record feels authentic to my experience, and I pray that it appropriately honors the forces in my life that allow me to sing my story.
